Fry and Cottrell early leaders at the 60th Annual March Meet

The March Meet held in Bakersfield CA turns 60-years old with a great turnout of cars filling the hallowed grounds of Famosa Drag Strip.

After early morning showers, the track was dried and racing was on around noon and went into the early evening hours.

Leading the front motored Nostalgia Top Fuel field is Los Angeles native Mendy Fry behind the wheel of the High Speed Motorsport dragster putting down a 5.736 219.51 to lead going into Saturday’s final qualifying session. In the  No. 2 spot is the Forever Young dragster driven by Gilroy, CA racer Bret Williamson carding a 5.933 in what will be a tight field with 12 cars fighting to get into an eight-car show.

In Funny Car, 25 floppers are in attendance to make the 16-car field. Leading after two sessions, Bobby Cottrell from Whittier, CA is on the top with a 5.650 259.31 driving the ’69 Camaro of Austin and O’Brian. A tick behind Cottrell is former NHRA driver Jeff Arend from Laverne, CA. Arend, driving the California Hustler of Don Nelson put down a 5.664.

Fuel Altered,  which runs on a 6.00 index was lead by two-time winner Dan Hix from Central Point, OR. Hix ran a right on 6.005 in his blown ’34 Chevy to take the pole with one session left for the 14 cars to make the wild eight-car field.
