It was several years ago at an NMCA race at Maple Grove Raceway. It was at a time when the Cobra Jet Mustangs had first come out. Sonny Leonard was in the staging lanes talking to noted Ford racer Chris Holbrook who was there racing his Cobra Jet.
Sonny waved me over and asked, “Do you know how much these cars are from the factory?”
“Yes, Sonny,” I said. “I think they’re around $90,000 turn key.”
“Are you kidding me? And people buy them? That’s a lot of money.”
“Wait Sonny,” I commented. “A lot of money? This from a guy who builds engines that are worth over $100,000?”
We had a good laugh. And we all have stories.
It’s recently come to us that Sonny Leonard passed away on Sunday morning and our condolences go out to his family. It can definitely be said the man was an icon in the motorsports industry and he will be missed.
